Effect of Petroleum Pricing on Agricultural Production in Nigeria: An Error Correction Modeling Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Nigeria is a dominant economic force in sub-Saharan Africa with a strong economy as well as booming oil and agricultural sectors. However, over-dependence on the production and export of oil as well as food imports has rendered the economy vulnerable to global price fluctuations. The increasing spate of fluctuations in the world price of oil affects not only the economic sector but also agricultural production. Despite the huge earnings from oil, Nigeria remains one of the most food insecure countries in the world. This study therefore estimates the effect of petrol or premium motor spirit (PMS) pricing on agricultural production using available time series data for 41 years (1970-2010) obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Annual Statistical Reports and National Bureau of Statistic’s Bulletins. The study reveals that the trend in production level of agricultural products persistently increased between 1984 and 2000, followed by a much lower growth rate between 2001 and 2002 sub-period and the increasing trend picked up again in 2003. There was an increasing trend pattern of petrol (PMS) prices except for 2009 when the price dropped from N70 to N65. Consumption of PMS was not relatively constant either. The Ordinary Least Square (OLS) results show that the quantity of agricultural output increased with the price of PMS. However, consumption of PMS had an inverse relationship with agricultural output. Effect of Petroleum Pricing on Agricultural Production in Nigeria: An Error Correction Modeling Approach

متن کاملThe Nexus of Interest Rate Deregulation , Lending Rate and Agricultural Productivity in Nigeria
The study examined the nexus of interest rate deregulation, lending rate and agricultural productivity in Nigeria by employing co-integration and error correction techniques on annual data spanning 1986 to 2009. Nigeria has embarked on several agricultural policy measures aimed at repositioning and enhancing variables that affects the sector’s productivity. The findings from the study showed th...

This study used an ECM to analyze the determinants of agricultural land expansion in Nigeria. Results show that at first differencing, Augmented Dickey Fuller test indicated stationarity for all the variables (p< 0.05) and there were 7 cointegrating vectors using Johansen test. The dynamic unrestricted short-run parameters of permanent cropland growth rates (68.62), agricultural production inde...

In this paper asymmetric price transmission mechanism and nonlinear adjustment between producer and retail prices of milk were examined in Zanjan Province of Iran. For this purpose, a Two-Regime Threshold Vector Error Correction Model (TVECM) and a Sup-LM Test developed by Hansen and Seo (2002) were employed for checking presence of a threshold effect. Application of unit root tests indicated...
متن کاملInvestigating Asymmetry of Prices and Productivity of Energy Carriers in Iran’s Agricultural Sector
Energy carriers are one of the most important inputs in the agricultural sector. These inputs have been the foundation of the development and transition of the agricultural sector from the traditional stage to the industrial stage. The energy per capita marginal consumption in Iran’s agricultural sector is 3.2 times greater than its global average. Therefore, it is essential to save and optimal...
